Seven Years in Front of a Camera

Seven Years in Front of a Camera

This one is from us, her parents, because Sadie says writing about being four is "not her department".

Her first shoot was an accident of weather. A local children's brand needed a toddler in a raincoat, the forecast said storm, and every other family cancelled. Sadie spent forty minutes stomping through puddles dragging an umbrella she refused to hold properly, and the brand used every single frame. We still have the contact sheet. It's the first waypoint on the timeline on her homepage.

Since then the rule has been simple: it continues while it's fun. Some years that meant a handful of catalogue days. One year it meant almost nothing, because gymnastics season mattered more, and that was fine. The work grew back when she did.

What's changed most isn't her face, although watching that grow up frame by frame is something we don't have words for. It's that she has opinions now. She'll ask what the campaign is for, she'll tell an art director (politely) that no eleven-year-old fastens a jacket like that, and she's almost always right. The photographers who rebook her tend to be the ones who listen.

People ask if we worry about her growing up on camera. Honestly, the camera has mostly been an excuse: for mountains at sunrise, for puddles at four, for a scrapbook of her whole childhood shot by professionals. She keeps the tennis trophies on the shelf. We keep the raincoat.
