The Hair Chair

Every booking confirmation for Amara goes back with one question attached: who is doing her hair?

It isn't fussiness. Her afro is the first thing art directors mention when they book her and the first thing that goes wrong when a set isn't ready for it. A stylist who knows textured hair will have her camera-ready in twenty minutes, halo intact, happy as anything. A stylist who doesn't will reach for a fine-tooth comb, and then we are having a very different morning.

So it's in writing every time: textured-hair experience on set, or Amara arrives styled by me and nobody touches it. Most clients are brilliant about it. The good ones already had it sorted before we asked, and one campaign last year booked her stylist before they booked her.

On the shoot behind this website, the photographer lit her hair like it was a second subject. Hard flash, warm wall, and that silhouette. When the first frames came through, Amara looked at her own shadow for a long moment and said, "my hair is ENORMOUS", with exactly the satisfaction you'd hope for.

It is enormous. It's staying that way.
