I spent thirty-eight years farming sheep on the side of a Welsh hill, and I intend to spend whatever comes next being photographed on one. I was scouted at sixty-one - at a charity calendar shoot I had very nearly talked myself out of - and signed with an agency three weeks later. My grandchildren think it's hilarious. So do I. That, I've learned, is precisely the quality clients book.

My work sits where I live: knitwear, heritage brands, slow fashion, walking boots, and the kind of campaign that needs weather in it. I don't act younger and I won't be retouched smoother - the lines took sixty-odd years of hill wind to earn and they photograph beautifully. What I offer is ease. A camera is just another kind of sheepdog: no use being nervous around it.

When I'm not working I'm in the garden, or walking the Black Mountains with a flask and no particular plan. I still keep eleven ewes, out of sentiment. I went silver at forty-four and never once argued with it, which turned out to be the best career decision I never knew I was making.
