Early in my career, three different photographers told me the same strange thing: I photograph like the middle of the night. Daylight tests came back fine; the frames everyone kept were the ones shot after the sun gave up. Eventually we stopped fighting it. I built my whole book between dusk and 3 a.m., and I haven't been booked for a breakfast-light campaign since. No complaints.

Night work is its own craft, and I've made it mine. I can hold perfectly still through a two-second exposure and give you motion in the same frame. I know what a red neon sign does to blonde hair, which streetlamps flatter and which ones lie, and how to find the single warm bulb in a cold blue street. Give me a leather jacket, a wet pavement and one light source, and I'll give you a cover.

Between shoots I collect vintage band t-shirts from festivals I'm too young to have attended, and I walk home along the river when the trams stop running - that's when this city does its best modelling. I'm based in Riga, but night happens everywhere, and I'm very happy to meet it wherever you're shooting.
